Obituary for Albert Alvah Hawkins

Albert Alvah Hawkins was born April 7, 1926, in Walton County, Kentucky, to Jesse Fred Hawkins and Lydia May (Anderson) Hawkins. He completed his earthly journey on January 21, 2022.

After graduating from high school in Fern Creek, Kentucky, Albert enlisted in the Army Air Corps near the end of World War II. In 1946 while on leave in San Francisco he met Marie Ellen Butler. Early the next year they were married. In order to continue his education, they moved to Jefferson City, Tennessee to attend Carson Newman College. While there, their son Albert Jr. was born. Shortly afterward, Albert was called back into service for the Korean conflict where he survived a catastrophic plane crash, spending time in a Tokyo hospital. Albert and Marie had a second son, Jonathan, who died shortly after birth. Albert and Marie later divorced.

Albert graduated with his bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisville in 1954. The next year he moved to Gallup, New Mexico where he taught school for two years. He then moved to Colorado where he met and married Rhodabelle Ann (Hill) and obtained his master’s degree. He taught in Lamar, Colorado, where son Timothy (deceased) was born. The family then moved to Jackson, Michigan and son David joined the family. They moved on to Kingston, Michigan the following year. Son Jonathan and daughter Faith were born in nearby Cass City. In 1960, the family moved to Kenton, Ohio where daughter Grace completed the family. Albert was the principal at Espy Elementary school in Kenton for five years. In 1966, the family moved to Colorado Springs where he continued as an elementary school administrator.

July 1972 brought the family to Jerome, Idaho where Albert became a dairy farmer and worked at the Tupperware plant for about ten years. From 1992 to 2006 Albert and Rhoda traveled to all 48 of the contiguous United States and to all the Canadian provinces in an RV making many friends and memories. After their travels they settled in Twin Falls, Idaho. Albert learned and taught basket weaving and was a regular vendor at the local Farmer’s Market. Rhoda died in 2009 just short of their fifty third wedding anniversary. Albert married Pat Walker in 2013, and she died in 2020.
